Uruguay 1st to buy XO

Uruguay buy first has become the country to the low-cost XO laptop of the One Laptop per Child Project.

The robust childfriendly laptop was designed by MIT tech maestro Nicholas Negroponte for school children of third world countries. However, OLPC had been a bit disappointed since orders did not flood in as expected for the ‘$100 laptops' which actually cost $188.

Much to its delight, Uruguay, a Latin American country, has placed an order for 1,00,000 machines. It is likely to purchase another three lakh laptops next year. Mr Negroponte expressed delight at the deal and said he hoped other countries would follow suit. OLPC will only sell the laptop directly to governments
