iPhone is Time's choice

Time magazine has named Apple's iPhone the ‘invention of the year'. This was a foregone conclusion for many Apple afficionados but it has had other geeks sneering and laughing.

The coveted gadget's launch some months ago saw mu-ch hysteria with people queuing up before Apple stores from the previous night to get their hands on it.

And the post-release hysteria matched the pre-release one, with even cynical techies saying that the gadget had changed the rules of the mobile game for ever. It is essentially a sleek combination of the iPod and a mobile phone with a touch screen which has had gizmo lovers drooling.

However, Apple'e decision not to allow consumers to "unlock" the phones to link it with other service providers had taken away some of the sheen. Time's wreath of laurels might bring it back.
