AMD's power packed chips
Advanced Micro Devices, Intel's chief rival, has announced a new chipset for highspeed computing. The new chipset, called Firestream 9170, uses the ‘parallelism' technology which is usually used in graphics processors. This is the first time it is being used for general computing.
Parallelism, as the name signifies, breaks up tasks to be worked by the processor in parallel, instead of one by one. This ensures high-performance computing.
Companies such as ATI and Nvidia have been manufacturing such processors for graphics.
The new chipset will be priced on the higher side but will offer 500 gigaflops of computing power.
