Microsoft for talking books

Microsoft has tied up with DAISY consortium to develop tools which will translate MS Word documents into digital audio for blind people and others unable to read print.

DAISY or Digital Accessible Information System is a format used for making talking books.

The two firms are planning to create a freely downloadable plug-in that would translate documents based on Open XML into DAISY XML. It is expected to go online in the beginning of 2008.

DAISY consortium was set up in 1996 by talking-book libra-ries and is linked to organisations of blind people worldwide.

The format is believed to be better than regular audio books since users can even conduct searches with it.
